Aparna Sens The rapist which marks Applause Entertainment’s foray into feature film, will celebrate its world premiere at the 26th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The film was produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Quest Films Pvt. produced. Ltd. The film will premiere in the ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ section and is one of 7 films nominated for the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award, which will be announced during the closing ceremony.
On the occasion of the reunion of the talented mother-daughter duo Aparna Sen-Konkona Sen Sharma after several acclaimed films, including the one that received the National Award, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, The Rapist also boasts great actors like Arjun Rampal and Tanmay Dhanania in key roles. After the overwhelming success of its premium drama series such as Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors and Scam in 1992, Applause Entertainment’s entry into the world of film begins wonderfully with this nomination.
The rapist tells the journey of three protagonists and how their lives intertwine due to a terrible incident. The film goes beyond overt crime to not only examine how it affects the survivors and perpetrators of the crime, but also examines how idealistic views change drastically when the truth hits uncomfortably close to one’s doorstep.

Says the eminent director-actor-writer Aparna Sen: “Aside from trying to research the reasons why our society makes so many rapists and the inequalities in our social system that are responsible for the genesis of criminals, it was the psychology of the three protagonists that led me to this story have attracted. Stripping off the layers and carefully constructed facades to get to the person below was a fascinating process. It was also fascinating to meet the two Indians face to face – India living in urban slums with its ancient beliefs and educated urban India with its “progressive” value systems.

Widely recognized as the largest film festival in Asia, the Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 6th to 15th this year.
