.Apk File

What is an APK file?

A file with the APK file extension is an Android package file used to distribute apps on Google’s Android operating system.
APK files are stored in ZIP format and are usually downloaded directly to Android devices, usually through Google Play, but can also be found on other websites.
Some of the contents found in a typical APK file include an AndroidManifest.xml, aclasses.dex, and a resources.arsc file; as well as a META-INF and res folder.

To open an APK file

APK files can be opened on a number of operating systems, but they are mainly used on Android devices.

Open an APK file on Android

To open an Android app on your Android device, you simply need to download it like any other file and then open it when prompted. However, APK files installed outside the Google Play Store may not be installed right away because of a security lock.
To bypass this download restriction and install APK files from unknown sources, navigate to one of these menus, depending on your Android version:

  • Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
  • Settings > Apps & Notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
  • Settings > Apps and notifications
  • Settings > Security

Depending on your device, you may need to give a specific app like Chrome permission to install unofficial APK files. Or, if you see it, check Install unknown apps or unknown sources.
If the file does not open, search for it using a file manager like Astro File Manager or ES File Explorer File Manager.

Open an APK file on Windows

You can open an APK file on a Windows PC using an Android emulator (these are our favorites) like BlueStacks. We have a guide on how to use BlueStacks to run Android apps on Windows if you need help.
You can also get Android apps for Windows 11 from the Microsoft Store, so you don’t have to deal with APK files at all.
Android Studio is used to create Android apps, but you can’t just use it to play an Android game or test a new app on your computer. It works on Windows and macOS.

To convert an APK file

Although a file conversion program or service is usually required to convert one file type to another, they are not very useful when dealing with APK files. This is because an APK file is an application designed to run only on specific devices, unlike other file types like MP4s or PDFs that work on a variety of platforms.
If you want to convert your APK file to ZIP instead, use the instructions explained above. Either open the APK file in a file extraction tool and then repackage it as a ZIP, or simply rename the .APK file to .ZIP.
As you have read above, you cannot convert an APK file to IPA for use on iOS, nor can you convert APK to EXE to use the Android app in Windows.
However, you can usually find an iOS alternative that works instead of the Android app you want to install on your iPhone or iPad. Most developers have the same app available on both platforms (an APK for Android and an IPA for iOS).
Instead of an APK to EXE converter, install a Windows APK opener from above and then use it to open the Android app on your computer. it doesn’t have to exist in EXE file format for this to work.
