On Sunday, his daughter Hannah posted a statement to Twitter to confirm that her father had been hospitalized.

The statement read: “I wanted to keep everyone informed that my father was hospitalized today (Sunday January 31st).

“He has been treated for pneumonia in the past few weeks and tested positive for COVID-19 last week.

“He was at home to this day when he needed extra help with breathing.

“He’s being treated in a ward even though he’s not in the intensive care unit.”

She added, “The medical attention he has received over the past few weeks has been remarkable.

“We know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do everything to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.

“We understand that everyone will wish him well, we will of course focus on my father and will update you when we are able. Hannah x. “

Fans rushed to the post office to convey their congratulations to Captain Tom and his family.

One person said, “We hope you will get well soon. All of the county will send you our love and thoughts. “

Another wrote: “Very sad to hear that. Thoughts are with you and the family. “

A third added: “Get well soon, Sir Captain Tom.

“You gave me a lot of pleasure when you selflessly thought of others.”
