Coronation Street revealed how they filmed the kissing scenes of Tyrone and Alina in tonight’s episode (Friday March 19).
Millions of Corrie viewers were shocked when the couple shared a secret kiss in Victoria Gardens. But how did they film close contact scenes during the pandemic?
Coronation Street: How were the kissing scenes of Tyrone and Alina filmed?
Show bosses have revealed that the scene was filmed with a real couple as a double kiss.
This was done to avoid close contact between actors and to comply with UK social distancing guidelines.
Regular Corrie extra Alex Mulvaney and his wife Hannah took on the roles of Tyrone and Alina to film the scene.
The action was filmed outside on the memorial bench on the Victoria Gardens set. However, Tyrone and Alina actors Alan Halsall and Ruxandra Porojnicu never sat on the bench together.
The two actors were shot dead while they were talking separately. It was later put together during post-production to give the illusion that they were next to each other.
To make sure the actors had the right eye-line, Coronation Street’s design department glued sunglasses onto a telescopic radio antenna so the two characters could look like they were looking into each other’s eyes.

Alex and Hannah were then called in to really kiss when the camera pulled back to see the couple in a clinch on the bench.
Hannah even had hair dye on the ends of her hair to make it look more like the Alina character.
Iain MacLeod speaks about the scenes
About the decision to use kiss doubles, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod said: “Our brilliant writers, actors and crew have for the most part worked skillfully to ensure that our characters are no more than two meters apart.
“We therefore told the same stories throughout the pandemic that we would have told in ‘normal’ times.
“But it felt wrong to tell the story of an illegal association in which someone betrays their partner based on lust and sexual attraction, just so we don’t see the chemistry and closeness.
“Hence the smoke and mirrors here.”
What did Alex say about filming the scenes?
Speaking of the scene, Alex said, “My agent said Coronation Street needed extras that were in support bubbles because I was extra three times a week and they knew half my family had extra work on the show . It worked out perfectly.
“My partner Hannah hadn’t done any extra work before, but my agent knew she had dark hair like Alina’s, so I asked her if she wanted to do that.”
“Hannah was nervous at first, but she’s a huge Coronation Street fan.”
“I’ve been on set many times and I could tell her what to expect and she was a little impressed when she saw the actors.
“I thought it was a really inventive idea, especially the sunglasses on the car antenna to hold the actors’ eyes.
“Given what was happening in the world, this was the best way to do it safely. It was a very nice day and it was clear that all performers and staff strictly follow the COVID rules. The organization and care is second to none. “
Alex reveals his family history on the cobblestones
Alex continued, “I wasn’t nervous because I’ve worked a lot on TV in the past and this wasn’t my first on-screen kiss. I love Coronation Street, but I tend not to see it when I know I’ll be there.
“I usually scare together, but the rest of my family will watch.

Alex then revealed that his family members had appeared on the cobblestones as extras before.
He added, “My dad has been a regular on cobblestones and rovers for forty-two years and he’s still going strong.
“He appears occasionally in Roy’s Rolls, now with my mother, brother and sister as extras. It’s quite a family affair. “
