Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers mistakenly mistook a hangover for a “devastating” eye condition.
Dave, who is back on TV with Sidekick Si King for The Hairy Bikers Go North, blamed too many beers for his blurry vision.
However, after self-diagnosing an optician, the TV chef was dismissed and referred to his family doctor and hospital.
Then he received the terrible news that he had glaucoma.

If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness.
In a resurfaced interview with The mirror, Dave described this worst-case scenario as “catastrophic”.
Dave said he told the optician, “‘I had a little bit of a night last night. So I’m probably just having a bad hangover.

“But she didn’t notice and referred me to my family doctor, who made a hospital appointment. And she was right. “
Dave added, “I was devastated. If it hadn’t been discovered so early, the result could have been disastrous. “
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve – which connects the eye to the brain – becomes damaged.
It is usually caused by the pressure of the liquid in front of the eye becoming too high.
The condition is most common in adults between the ages of 70 and 80, but as Dave demonstrated, it can affect people of all ages.
The NHS warns that glaucoma doesn’t always cause symptoms in the beginning and is therefore often diagnosed first with routine eye tests.
“It tends to develop slowly over many years, affecting the edges of your vision first (peripheral vision),” the NHS“Says the glaucoma website.
If a patient is already experiencing symptoms, this may include blurred vision or seeing rainbow colored circles around bright lights.
Since his own diagnosis of glaucoma, Dave has worked hard to raise awareness about the eye disease.
In 2018 he joined Specsavers and RNIB. together [Royal National Institute of Blind People], for a campaign that coincides with National Eye Health Week.
Back then, Dave was talking about the impact his glaucoma could have on his career if it wasn’t diagnosed.
“Fortunately, it was discovered during a routine eye test, but if it had gone unnoticed I could have gone blind and that would have a huge impact on how I do the job I love so much,” he said.

Dave added, “Like so many people, my career is my passion and it’s so hard to imagine doing all the things I love to do when I can’t see whether it’s riding my bike, driving a car, or preparing ingredients .
“The thought that I might have lost my sight is really scary.”
