Gerry Marsden dies at the age of 78 and fans pay tribute to the “national treasure”

Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the Pacemakers has died after a short illness.

The legendary singer died at the age of 78 after an infection in his heart, his devastated pal Pete Price informed fans.

Gerry Marsden dies after a heart infection

The DJ wrote on Twitter: “After speaking to the family, I have to tell you with a heavy heart that the legendary Gerry Marsden MBE has sadly passed away after a brief illness that was an infection in his heart.

“I send all the love in the world to Pauline and his family. You’ll never Walk Alone.”

Liverpool’s Gerry is best known as the lead singer in the Merseybeat group Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Their first single was How Do You Do It, a track originally given to the Liverpool band The Beatles.

It became her first number 1 hit, her second being I Like It, followed by “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

Today the latter song is the adopted anthem of Liverpool FC and several other football clubs.

Her other tracks included “It Will Be Alright”, “Don’t Let The Sun Make You Cry”, “Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey” and “I’m the One”.

Fans pay tribute to Gerry and the Pacemakers front man

The fans paid tribute to the “national treasure” on Twitter.

One simply said, “Rest in peace, Gerry YNWA.”

Another wrote: “RIP Gerry – a man who never really knows how big his role is and who will continue to play in people’s lives. Such sad news. The thoughts are with Pauline and his family. YNWA. “

A third wrote, “I am very sorry to hear this. Gerry was a national treasure for sure. I still regularly listen to Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey – just one of his classics. REST IN PEACE.”

Someone else said, “Oh no. How very sad. Condolences to his family #RIPGerryMarsden. “
