Gogglebox star Mary Killen came close to death after falling ill

Gogglebox star Mary Killen once revealed she suffered a terrible death blow after contracting Legionnaires’ disease.

Channel 4’s favorite, 68, appears alongside husband Giles on the popular reality series.

But while Mary appears fit and healthy now, she was “near death” over 20 years ago.

Speak with The guardMary opened the terrible experience.

She said, “The closest thing I got to death was when I got Legionnaires’ Disease in 1999.

“I caught it from the air conditioning in the Bahamas and developed something like Beau’s lines: white ridges over your fingernails that are a sign that your body is shut down because of death.”

Mary also added, “I was blown away.

“I’ve never been the same since then.”

Legionnaires’ disease is a lung infection that can be caught by inhaling water droplets containing bacteria.

Since joining the Gogglebox cast in 2015, Mary and Giles have won over the nation.

And luckily for the Channel 4 show, the two are stronger than ever.

To speak to Daily starMary admitted that attending Gogglebox “saved” her marriage.

She told the publication, “Giles and I were like ships going by in the night.

“I got up early, he went to bed late and we seldom ate together.”

The couple met when they were 21 and have been married for more than 30 years.

Meanwhile, last month, Mary was forced to let her husband know of his views on Prince Phillip.

At that time, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week, left the hospital after a month-long stay.

Mary commented on his appearance on the goggle box: “It looks a little different there.”

Then Giles was chipped in: “He looks a little reptilian.”

The television report then stated that the Duke was only 90 days away from his 100th birthday, a milestone he was dying to celebrate.

“Let’s just hope he doesn’t choke on a lozenge, Mary,” added Giles.

Mary snapped back, however, “Oh, stop being angry. Why should he even have a lozenge? “
