Imtiaz Ali is one of the best directors in Bollywood today. He has given the millennial generation some of their favorite romantic dramas. He believes that he creates his stories from the fragments of real life. He watches people around him and creates beautiful characters on the screen. Be it Viruses from Socha Na Tha or Geet from Jab We Met, the characters in Imtiaz’s films look real and real and, above all, can be assigned. You can instantly refer to their personas on the screen. Let’s take a look at Imtiaz’s Bollywood trip and remember the lovable characters we met in his films.
Socha Na Tha
In this 2005 release, Virus (Abhay Deol) is portrayed as concerned about obligations, but Aditi (Ayesha Takia) makes him believe otherwise. On their journey, Viruses and Aditi find that what they were looking for in different locations was right in front of them. They both ran away from each other when each wanted them to tie the knot in the first place.
Jab We Met
A heartbroken businessman, Aditya (Shahid Kapoor), sets out to jump off a train but is saved by Geet (Kareena Kapoor). Their personalities are exactly opposite: one is introverted while the other is loud enough to shake the entire universe. The film shows their unusual journey of understanding themselves as they fall in love.
Veera (Alia Bhatt), a girl from a wealthy Delhi family, falls in love with her classic kidnapper in a classic case of Stockholm Syndrome. But their love does not come from a place of victimization and idolatry. It comes from the liberation she experienced after being kidnapped. Without her kidnapping, she would never have been able to confront the demons within with the confidence she gains at the end of the film.
Tamashas Ved claims to be a figure who makes Imtiaz resonate with himself. The 2015 release, with Ranbir Kapoor as Ved and Deepika Padukone as Tara, was about the former’s journey to becoming the man he wanted to be. Ved was not aware of how to free himself from the shackles of society and only realized the true meaning of his life after Tara showed him the mirror. For someone who couldn’t argue with his father about his career choice by leaving his job and telling the reason behind it in a story, Ved redefined himself as the film progressed. In the process he fell in love with Tara and Imtiaz gave us another story that we should cherish.
