Is Apple TV + Musical worth the song and dance?

The Saturday Night Live Team takes us on a song and dance journey into the past with the new musical Schmigadoon!

Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael-Key star in this sitcom as Melissa and Josh – two doctors whose love story has ended up at a crossroads.

On a camping trip to get their romance going again, the two accidentally stumble upon Schmigadoon! – a literally real 1940s music city.

Unfortunately, the band’s musical numbers and the bizarre case, which strangely looks like a set on a lot in the middle of Los Angeles, are just the beginning of their problems.

It turns out they’re stuck there.

Trapped by a magical curse, they can only leave when they find true love.

… Since they cannot walk, it means that these are probably not related.

This six-part musical is a perfect mix of famous SNL faces and Broadway’s most beloved faces, including Alan Cumming as Mayor Menlove, the city’s leader with a heartbreaking secret.

Kristen Chenowith also plays the bitter old woman who isn’t too kind to the newcomers, and Aaron Tveit is the handsome carnival owner with a song in his heart.

But can Melissa and Josh find the song in theirs before it’s too late?

Meanwhile, Jane Krakowski, Ariana DeBose, Jaime Camil, Fred Armisen and Dove Cameron complete the cast.

Schmigadoon! brings the golden age of film musicals into the world of the 21st century and never loses your heart.

It’s clear that the team behind the show have a real love for the movies they air up.

Schmigadoon thus achieves an apparently rare performance in modern parody. It makes you love the real story while acknowledging that it is made of satire.

Seven brides for seven brothers. The sound of music. Sing in the rain. You all kind of get a nice little nod here.

So if you have a weakness for a good musical, you will really enjoy these three hours.

Is Schmigadoon! worth the watch?

Schmigadoon! is a lot of fun and is an absolute love letter to the musicals of bygone years.

The show combines the joy of the Hollywood classics without shying away from the parts that haven’t aged as much and is a perfect binge watch.

So it’s a bit of a shame that this comes out in installments rather than all at once. But hopefully it doesn’t take too much of its spark.

Finally, while some repeated jokes get a little thin towards the very end of the series, Schmigadoon! knows its beauty and pulls you under its spell.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Schmigadoon! arrives on Apple TV + on July 16.
