The Serpent on BBC One is a brand new eight-part drama that begins tonight (Friday January 1st).

French actor Tahir Rahim plays Charles Sobhraj – a serial killer who terrorized backpackers in Southeast Asia in the 1970s.

It also plays Jenna Coleman as his accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc.

It’s been over 40 years since Sobhraj wreaked havoc. Where is he now?

What story does The Serpent tell on BBC One?

The new drama from the 1970s tells the story of the serial killer Sobhraj and the hunt for him across the region.

Known as a master of disguise and deception, Sobhraj often escaped the clutches of the police.

It is believed that he escaped capture on three different continents.

This series follows the story of Herman Knippenberg, a junior diplomat from the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok, who is about to put him on trial.

Who was Charles Sobhraj and how many people did he kill?

Charles Sobhraj was born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1944 and was nicknamed The Bikini Killer, The Serpent, or The Splitting Killer.

As a teenager, Sobhraj ended up in jail after a series of minor crimes.

After his release he moved between high society Paris and the criminal underworld, where he started burglaring and dealing drugs.

He fled France and went to Thailand, where he began his murder attempt.

Sobhraj targeted western tourists and beatniks and hippies.

It is believed that he killed at least 12 people.

How did he kill his victims?

Sobhraj wasn’t picky or didn’t have one Modus operandi, typical of many serial killers.

He poisoned, strangled, drowned, stabbed, and in some cases burned his victims alive.

And unlike many serial killers, Sobhraj did not commit his murders because of deep-seated impulses.

He’s still in jail.

Charles Sobhraj was caught in New Delhi, India, in July 1976 after an attempt to drugged a group of travelers failed.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment in India, but thanks to his charm, he bribed many prison officials and enjoyed a life of luxury.

He was released in 1997 after his arrest warrants mysteriously disappeared and returned to Paris.

After courting the public, Sobhraj was arrested again in Nepal and sentenced to another life imprisonment.

How old is Charles Sobhraj?

Sobhraj is now 76 years old and not in the best of health.

In 2018, he underwent multiple open heart surgeries.
