Karan Johar: A man who wears several hats

Karan Johar, or KJO as he is known, has achieved success in each of the many creative zones he has attempted. As a director, he has created films and moments that have left their mark on Bollywood. As a producer, he brought Dharma Productions, a film company he inherited, to the top of the league. When the entertainer turns 49 today, Nikita Saha lists a few highlights from KJo’s showbiz career:

The beginnings

KJo became famous with the Bollywood blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, which played Shah Rukh Khan’s friend in the film. But did you know that Karan’s long Bollywood career actually began with the lead role in the Doordarshan classic? Indradhanush 1989? The show was directed by Aanand Mahendroo and was about kids and a time machine!

Directorial debut

He didn’t just play a cameo Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge But KJo also put on the assistant director’s hat for this film and worked with director Aditya Chopra. Three years later, in 1998, KJo made his debut as a director on “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” a huge Bollywood blockbuster and his first taste of success.

On a winning streak

KJo’s directorial career made progress as his films Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Ghum and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna became big box office hits. As a producer, his studio Dharma Productions has earned billions of hits including Kal Ho Na Ho, Agneepath, Dostana, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Humpty Sharma Ki Duhaniya and Student of the Year.

The SRK connection

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, a coveted on-screen couple in the 1990s, played a huge role in the success of Karan Johar’s first two films. His close association with Shah Rukh Khan also grew with every film they worked on. Karan Johar is also known for designing costumes for Shah Rukh Khan.

Coffee with Karan

KJo became a household name when he became a talk show host with his primetime show Coffee with Karan. The show essentially fulfills the many curiosities of Bollywood fandom around the world and has often been amid countless controversies due to the nature of its content.

With so many accolades for his name, Karan Johar is now considered one of Bollywood’s Big Daddies!
