Expert explains how stress affects weight loss
Pharmacist and founder Formulate health, Mina Khan explained why stress can cause people to lose weight.
She said, “Stress, especially chronic stress that is almost constant and long-lasting, can lead to a variety of physical health problems in the body.
“To put it very clearly: stress exhausts the body. When we are stressed, our “fight or flight” system is in full swing and physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, pace, heavier breathing, etc. cause us to burn many more calories than when we are relaxed.
“High levels of stress also affect our sleep, and lack of sleep can have a direct impact on our leptin and ghrelin levels (the hunger hormones).
“For some, this can lead to overeating, but for others, it can lead to severe malnutrition.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Lee out Dr. Fox Pharmacy explains how stress can also affect weight gain.
She said, “When you experience stress, your finely tuned body instantly jumps into action.
“Stress for any reason – for example a shock like acute illness or bereavement – turns the autonomic nervous system (ANS) on.”
Dr. Lee continued, “Emotional stress often leads to an increase in appetite and what is known as comfort eating.
“There is a tendency to crave high-fat and high-carbohydrate foods. The reasons for this aren’t clear, but emotional stress often leads to sleep deprivation.

“The hormones leptin and ghrelin, which control appetite and help you feel full, are produced during sleep. Lack of sleep therefore leads to disturbed eating habits. “
