Kate Garraway revealed the moment when husband Derek Draper said, “I can’t go on” on a devastating phone call from his hospital bed.
Derek, 53, had spent months in intensive care and had come to consciousness after becoming infected with the coronavirus when he made his confession last November.
Kate recalled, “Derek was conscious and unconscious and when he said that it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me he was still there.
“Though it was horrible to think that his mood was so bad.”

In Kate’s ITV documentary Finding Derek, which will air Tuesday March 23, the footage shows the mother of two on a Facetime call where Derek says, “Kate, there is no way out. There is no way out.
“I’ve come to a point where I just think about it. Just damn it. “
She replies: “How do you die?”
The emotional Derek then says, “Yes … I don’t know how to deal with it, I don’t know how to deal with it.”
Last week, Kate admitted how much Derek was struggling mentally.
“Derek’s brain is no longer his friend”
The 53-year-old broadcaster told The One Show, “He’s someone who has been both from that time before I knew him, when he was in politics, and all the work he’s done in mental health because that’s his thing now.
“His brain has always been his best friend and he lived on his mind and now his brain – as we all know, controls his body – is no longer his friend and he is struggling to get out.”

In the trailer for Finding Derek, Kate says, “Derek is the sickest person the medical team has treated this year.
“Will he be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?”
The screen goes black when the message says, “A year later, Derek is still in the hospital.”
