Popular TV presenter Monty Don spoke about his mental health issues in an unearthed interview.
Best known for his presence on the BBC’s Gardeners’ World, the presenter spoke about his previous struggles with depression.
And he revealed that his wife was the one who urged him to seek help over the years.
What did Monty Don say?
Monty revealed how his sanity affected the business of him and his wife Sarah in the 1980s.

When they were at the height of their money problems, Monty said he would be spending more time in the garden.
He remembered his wife once saying to him, “You have a streak of madness that is endlessly exhausting.”
During this time, Monty believes that he has fallen into a deep depression. He confessed that Sarah was the one urging him to seek help as her children would ask, “Why does Dad keep crying?”

In another interview with The Times, Monty added, “You [Sarah] said you need to see a doctor because I cannot cope with you and three young children and our life as it is.
“I need help, and the only way I can get help is for you to get help.”
After talking to his doctor, Monty was treated with antidepressants and started therapy.
He said, “Antidepressants helped initially and I had cognitive behavioral therapy with the NHS, which was very good.
He added that he also used a “light box” which he found helpful.
Will he return to the gardening world?
Monty fans were very disappointed when he revealed he was taking a break from Gardeners’ World.
He has presented the BBC Two program since 2003 when he replaced Alan Titchmarsh.
Monty is the first self-taught gardener in the history of the show.
However, he revealed that he would not be on a new episode – much to the horror of fans.
He wrote on Twitter: “After being a year late due to COVID, I’m going to a studio today (and for the next four days) to read My Garden World as an audiobook.”
However, when people wondered if he would “be back to the gardening world in time,” Monty brought the news.
He replied, “No – Adam will take the helm to hide.”
This means that next week’s show will be hosted by Adam Frost instead, as Monty is taking time off.
Gardeners’ World airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on BBC Two.
