Priyanka Lalwani: “If you come from Mumbai or if you know someone from the industry, it will be a lot easier for you”

Born and raised in Nagpur, Priyanka Lalwani started modeling and finished second in a beauty pageant. She has made regional films, done advertising and is also a presenter. During her studies, the actress joined an event management company founded by her friends. Due to her addiction to showbiz, she and the team moved their base to Mumbai and began managing popular singers. But Priyanka wanted to give another chance to acting, and the trip did not go smoothly.

“It was and is a fight. I don’t have a film background so when I first moved to Mumbai I didn’t know a lot of people. My contacts in event management and a few friends in town guided me. If you are from Mumbai or if you know someone in the industry it will be easier for you. So it took me time. You have to audition regularly without expecting much in return. And to top it off, if you do a project and don’t publish it, that’s a whole different story. It happened to me, so I know how heartbreaking it is, ”says the actor who made the TV show Jamai Raja, the web series Spotlight 2 and the films Vaaesar e Gum and Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se.

There are other actors who are their namesake. Are they bothering too many Priyankas in the industry? “Do you remember William Shakespeare who said: What is a name? I believe in that too. It doesn’t really bother me. Each of us is unique in its own way, ”says the actor, who is also a hand model.

“I remember going to an audition for a commercial and they asked me if I would like to do hand modeling. After I agreed, they took a few pictures of my hands and I was selected. I’ve done some ads for Cadbury, Manish Malhotra’s Love and Care, Nutribullet, and others, ”she shares.

Priyanka had her first television break with Jamai Raja. She shared her pictures with some casting directors and one of them was working on Jamai Raja which she was unaware of. She was soon called for an audition and got the role of interpreter on the show.

But why didn’t you work on television after that? “It’s not that I didn’t audition, but it didn’t work out. Sometimes I didn’t like the role, sometimes I was rejected. And in some of the shows I only did cameos, ”she adds.

Priyanka has also made music videos. Her debut was called Oh Muhinji. “It’s a Sindhi song sung by Shaan and Manjushree. The song turned out really well. In between I did the Sindhi web series Sindhi Wedding Bells. The response was so good that the makers made a second part of it, ”she says.

While things were going well, the pandemic disrupted the facility, but Priyanka isn’t the one to lose hope. “It’s been two tough years for everyone. In the midst of the crisis, I am grateful to have a roof over my head, food on my plate and a healthy family. I tried not to feel down and kept busy. I stayed close to my family and friends. This situation taught me to be more compassionate. It also made it clear to me that we should all save up a little for the rainy day and that when the going gets tough, the tough guys get going. And most of all, life is small, so we have to live in the moment, ”she concludes.
