Dr. Hilary said, “Yes, they are.”

Richard insisted that while there are more cases in the UK, these may not lead to more hospitalizations.

Hilary said, “But we’re seeing hospital admissions. We may not see that many, we don’t see the big peak in hospital stays and deaths, but we still make our NHS staff work extremely hard to keep hospital stays low and keep people from dying.

“The intensive care units are pretty busy again and some experts say we are already in a third wave.

“So my question is, why are we loosening the restrictions now, when it gets worse, when we have a new variant that causes big problems in India, but also big problems here.”

He added, “Until we get this under control, we will have problems in the future.”

When asked what “under control” means, Dr. Hilary: “It means living with it. It means vaccinating the entire population and getting booster doses.

“It means continuing with social distancing for the time being, wearing masks and disinfecting, and being careful.”

Richard added, “So if you were Prime Minister, at some point in the next 48 hours you would be like, ‘Excuse me everyone, but you will be sticking with it for the foreseeable future.

“‘We’ll live with it through the summer, into the fall, and possibly until Christmas, until the last person ready to be stung.” I mean, that’s a big question. “

Hilary said, “It’s a big question – it’s a pandemic. It’s the greatest health hazard in a hundred years. So we have to take it seriously. “

Richard hit back: “But not now! Because the vaccine broke the link between infections and the hospital. “
