R and RStudio: what’s the difference?

First-time users of R are often confused about the difference between R and RStudio. RStudio is actually an add-on to R: it takes the R software and adds a very user-friendly graphical interface to it. So when using RStudio, one is still using the full version of R while benefiting from increased functionality and usability due to an improved user interface. Therefore, when using R, one should always use RStudio; working with R itself is very cumbersome. In these tutorials, textbf{ab Chapter 3} R is used to refer to R and RStudio, assuming that the reader works in RStudio.
Because RStudio is an add-on to R, you must first download and install R as well as RStudio, two steps that are performed separately. On your computer, R and RStudio will appear as separate installed programs. When you use R for data analysis, you will always open and work in RStudio. You must keep R installed on your computer for RStudio to work, even though you will probably never open R itself.
