Somy Ali on her Human Being T-shirt and Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation: I believe imitation is the best form of flattery

Somy Ali’s trip to Mumbai from the United States to meet the love of her life, Salman Khan, is a well-known story. We also know that in addition to dating Khan, Ali worked in several Hindi films before returning to her Miami home. “After I broke up with my ex in December 1999, there was no reason for me to stay in India again. I also wanted to finish my education because I had dropped out of ninth grade to move to Mumbai. So it made sense to return to Miami, ”says the actor who turned activist and humanitarian and now runs No More Tears, an NGO that supports and empowers survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence.

Ali also runs a clothing line and the funds from this business are used by the NGO. “So-Me Designs is a line of t-shirts under the No More Tears umbrella. The shirts are sold to save the lives of abused women, children and men,” said Ali. There is misunderstanding when she creates another brand called Human Being after a t-shirt with these two words she designed became popular. Many also couldn’t believe the coincidence when Khan began to be a human foundation dedicated to the improvement of the underprivileged.

Ali explains, “There was no such thing as a“ brand ”as a person. However, my first t-shirt I designed was called Mensch. The print on the t-shirt has several religious symbols between the two words human (above) and being (below). The point behind my design was that it doesn’t matter which religion we belong to, as we are all one, that is, the human being. Salman turned Human Being’s shirt over and called his NGO Being Human. I believe that imitation is the best form of flattery. “

Talking more about No More Tears and the nature of the job, Ali says the NGO rescues victims of human trafficking, domestic violence and child sexual and physical abuse. “We offer them a safe space, housing, legal assistance, therapy, medical help, education and jobs. Since NMT was founded in 14 years, we have saved and rescued over 30,000 women, children and men. Nobody at NMT receives a salary and all the funds we receive go straight to victims’ aid programs. We are funded by foundations, government grants and private donors, ”she adds.

Ask her about her plans to return to acting, and Ali denies having any. “I’ve never been interested in acting and I still don’t know. I want to write and direct a web series based on my experience in the three countries I’ve spent my time in as there are a lot of interesting stories to tell, ”she says.
