If you haven’t seen it yet, two warnings: the final episode will leave you with an almighty lump in your throat, and huge spoilers follow immediately in this article!
So in the closing moments of After Life Season 3, Tony is walking through a field away from the Tambury Fair.
At one point, his late wife, Lisa, appears alongside him and their dog, Brandy – the man and woman briefly hold hands before she disappears.
Then Brandy disappears before Tony himself vanishes.
Did Tony take his own life?
Fans of the drama have speculated about what the ending of After Life season 3 actually means — and interpret it differently.
Some fear it heralded Tony’s suicide – the contemplation of taking his life was a theme throughout the show.
“Another brilliant season but a bit confused about the ending why tony greet his friend? did tony oblige Suicide?? Thanks for such an amazing series,” one tweeted.
“Rick Gervais was right about killing his own character because nobody expected it,” surmised another viewer.
“When then tony commits Suicide Who says the line ‘everyone dies in the end?’” asked another.
Despite the assumptions that Tony ultimately decides to take his own life, there is actually a more positive and life-affirming message behind it.
After Life Season 3 ends – Ricky Gervais explains everything
The show’s creator, Ricky Gervais, has opened up about what the ending of After Life season 3 actually means in a conversation with Tilly Pearce Digital Spy.
“Life just goes on, you know? When we’re all dead and buried, that field is still there, the Tambury Fair is still going, that tree is still there, and it basically means we’re all dying, but not today,” he told them.
“That says the end. “We all die, but not today”. Enjoy it while you can, life is so finite. Whenever you are born and whenever you die, it’s all over. So enjoy this little bit, this tiny little bit.
“You don’t exist for 13.5 billion years, then you have 80-90 years if you’re lucky, and then you die, never to exist again. So you only have experience and then you are dead and buried and forgotten.”
What song is played about the end of After Life season 3?
The haunting and emotional song is called Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.
The “I’ve Seen Love From Both Sides Now” lyrics only fueled some viewers’ theories that Tony ended up wanting to die.
Ricky Gervais probably ruined the one really good moment in “Love Actually” by choosing this track.
Until it was used in After life, it was synonymous with that heartbreaking scene shortly after Emma Thompson’s character realized her husband (Alan Rickman) was cheating on her.
She disappeared into the bedroom and sobbed softly, then tried to calm herself while Joni’s tortured singing played.
How many TV and movie fans will now associate it with After Life instead?
