Who was Peter Manuel?
In real life, Peter Manuel was a Scottish-American serial killer who was born on March 13, 1927.
He was born to Scottish parents in New York City before the family returned to the UK in 1932.
At the age of 10, Peter was known to the local police as a petty thief.
At the age of 16, he committed a series of sexual assaults that resulted in his nine-year sentence in Peterhead Prison.
In 1955 he successfully defended a rape charge in the Airdrie Sheriff Court.
He was eventually found guilty of murdering seven people in Lanarkshire and southern Scotland between 1956 and his arrest in January 1958.
He is said to have murdered two more.
Peter was nicknamed “The Beast of Birkenshaw” by police prior to his capture.
His first victim was Anne Kneilands in 1956.
Peter pursued her, raped her, and beat her to death at East Kilbride Golf Course in the Calderwood area.
What happened to Peter Manuel?
The killer was hanged in Barlinnie Prison in Glasgow on July 11, 1958.
He was only 31 years old when he died in a Scottish prison.
He was the penultimate prisoner to die on the Barlinnie gallows.
His last words should be: “Turn up the radio and I’ll go quietly”.
Since his death, Peter has been featured on screen several times.
James Nunn portrayed him in the fourth season of Murder Maps on Netflix and UKTV.
Brian Cox is also said to have loosely related his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in the movie Manhunter to Peter Manuel.

This gripping drama series recreates the quest of detective William Muncie to bring serial killer Peter Manuel to justice.
The story begins in 1946 when William Muncie arrested 16-year-old Peter Manuel for a series of sexual assaults.
Nine years later, Peter Manuel is released from prison – only to commit further crimes against accidental victims.
Worse, the distraught criminal remotely mocks Lanarkshire detective William Muncie.
It is an always relevant story of good versus evil.
