Who plays DS Dodds at McDonald & Dodds?
Jason Watkins portrays DS Dodds in McDonald & Dodds.
He is described as the “humble and quietly brilliant DS Dodds” who faces Tala Gouveia’s “ambitious and lively” DCI McDonald.
The two repeat their roles in three new feature films that will be broadcast on Sunday evening at 8 p.m.
Jason says, “I love playing Dodds and I really hope to keep playing him on more shows.
“Robert Murphy, the creator, really created a wonderful character.
“You could say he’s a bit like Columbo, but there’s also a bit of Poirot in there.
“Dodds has a gentleness toward him, a naivete, but in many ways that’s his forte.
“He is able to use his perceived innocence to extract information from whoever he’s with and use it to his advantage.”
What is DS Dodds’ first name?
Creator Robert Murphy has revealed that we may never know DS Dodds’ first name.
Before the start of the second series, he said, “I could reveal Dodd’s first name in the very last episode if he ever shows up!
“The truth is, I don’t really know what his name is.
“I just decided not to give him a first name because I like a little bit of puzzles around him.
“I like to hold back some things so that the more you have to imagine about him, the more fascinating it becomes.”
Robert also reveals the real reason the viewer never sees McDonald and Dodds’ personal lives.
He says, “It’s just my preference to stay in the field with them.
“For it to be interesting, when you go home, it has to be dysfunctional, and then it goes into this whole tortured detective vein.
“The thing about McDonald and Dodds is that there isn’t a huge traumatic backstory for either of them, they’re actually quite happy.”
