What is the company and who is in it?

ITV aired Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with US presenter Oprah Winfrey, and the royal couple have repeatedly referred to “The Institution”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were keen to distinguish between the royal family as a family and the royal family as a company.

But who exactly is the institution?

What did Meghan Markle say about The Institution on the ITV program?

Meghan said in the interview: “So there is the family and then there are the people who run the institution.

“Those are two different things. And it’s important to be able to subdivide that because the queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me. “

CNN reported that the monarchy is similar to a government department or independent public body.

The queen is the head of this organization, with a hierarchy under her based on succession.

The company as a business

As royal fans will know, this puts Prince Charles behind the Queen, followed by Prince William, then his children George, Charlotte and Louis, followed by Prince Harry.

The royal biographer Penny Junor, author of the book The Firm: The Troubled Life of the House of Windsor, compared the royal family to a big multi-million pound business.

The royal family is big business, though there are more ups and downs than the stock market.

She said it was Prince Philip who came up with The Firm.

However, it seems that while the Duke of Edinburgh might have popularized the term, its origins could go back a little further.

As reported by the New York Times, it goes back to King George VI, the Queen’s father, who said, “British kings are ‘not a family, we are a company’.”

And like a company, those who run it must avoid weakening it in any way.

Institution includes the royal staff

Penny wrote, “The royal family is big business, though there are more ups and downs than the stock market.

“All royal executives and their powerful employees should make every effort to avoid even a hint of scandal that could damage the reputation of the family business.”

Bustle highlighted one of the key differences between the royals’ family side and the institution. The latter is reported to include the network of employees such as communication staff and aides.

According to CNN, royal employees work in five main departments. These are HR, IT, the private secretary’s office, and the wallet and treasurer’s office.
