Who is Gyles Brandreth and what is he famous for?

Gyles is a former Tory MP who is known for wearing some of the most eccentric jumpers in the kingdom.

He is also a writer, broadcaster, and casual actor.

First, Gyles hosted the ITV children’s show Puzzle Party in the 1970s after graduating from Oxford.

In the 1980s he became a presenter for TV-am’s Good Morning Britain.

In 1992 he was elected to the House of Commons as a Conservative MP for the Chester constituency.

He served until his defeat in 1997 and resumed his media career.

Gyles is regularly featured on panel discussions including Countdown, The One Show, QI, and Have I Got News for You.

He has written both fiction and non-fiction books, is a speaker and does a lot of radio work.

More recently, Gyles has appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox alongside Sheila Hancock and Maureen Lipman.

How old is he?

Gyles Daubeney Brandreth was born on March 8, 1948 in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia.

He is currently 73 years old.

His father was a legal officer with the Allied Control Commission in Germany when Gyles was born.

After Gyles moved to London with his parents at the age of three, he was educated at the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in South Kensington and at the Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire.

Gyles continued his education at Oxford University.

Is Gyles Married?

Gyles has been married to Michèle Brown for nearly 50 years.

He married the writer and publisher in Westminster in 1973.

They live in Barnes in south west London.

Does he have kids?

Gyles and Michèle have three grown children.

Benet is a lawyer and retired actor, Saethryd is a journalist, and Aphra is a retired government economist and now a veterinary finance director.

Aphra was the Conservative candidate in the 2019 general election for Kingston and Surbiton constituencies, but did not win the seat.

Gyles and Michèle have one grandchild, Aphra’s daughter Kiyo.

Broadcaster and Jane Austen fan Gyles explores the life of famous writer Jane Austen.

He visits the places that inspired her and uncovers some of the real events that lie behind some of their greatest stories.

It begins with a visit to her birthplace, the village of Steventon in rural Hampshire.

Famous faces also contribute, with David Baddiel saying, “Only Shakespeare matters that.”

In Jane Austen’s footsteps with Gyles, Brandreth will begin on Channel 5 on Wednesday March 31, 2021 at 9 p.m.
