Night Stalker on Netflix is the latest true crime documentary that is likely to be the talk of everyone in the coming weeks. But why did his serial killer subject Richard kill Ramirez?
Ramirez – a vicious murderer in Los Angeles and the wider California area in the 1980s – was also known as the Night Stalker.
But who was Richard Ramirez, why? was he called the night stalker and why did he kill?
Who is Richard Ramirez?
Richard Ramirez was born in El Paso, New Mexico, in 1960.
The youngest of five children and the son of Mexican immigrants, his nickname was “Richie” to other family members.

When he was 22, he dropped out of college and moved to California.
He began his assassination attempt there in San Francisco.
Why was he nicknamed Night Stalker?
Unlike most serial killers, Ramirez didn’t follow any particular pattern [Modus Operandi – MO]and makes his attacks look like random interventions.
It was LA Times employees who invented the nickname.
Alternatives such as The Walk-in Killer and The Screen-Door Intruder were reportedly discussed during an editorial meeting.
The nickname Night Stalker refers to Ramirez’s nightly crimes.
Why did Richard kill Ramirez?
It is alleged that Ramirez’s father was violent at home.
Ramirez slept in a cemetery so much as to escape domestic life.
Ramirez, a teenager, lived with his cousin Miguel to escape him.
Miguel also bragged about raping Vietnamese women and murdered his wife in front of 13-year-old Ramirez.

Ramirez later moved in with his sister and brother-in-law.
The brother-in-law was an obsessed “peeping Tom” and took Ramirez with him during his nightly exploits.
Ramirez then developed an interest in Satanism, began taking LSD, and fantasized about sexual violence.
Richard Ramirez still alive today?
Sentenced to death in 1985, he remained on death row for an additional 24 years.
During this time, psychiatrists had discovered that he had schizoid personality disorder.

As a heavy drug user, he suffered from chronic hepatitis C virus infection in prison.
Ramirez died at the age of 53 after complications from B-cell lymphoma in a California hospital.
