Why did Pauline leave Doc Martin?
Pauline Lamb was a popular cast on the ITV1 show for three series.
She appeared in series two, three and four from 2005 to 2009.
The character replaced former receptionist – and notoriously incompetent – Elaine Denham in the first series (played by Motherland’s brilliant Lucy Punch).
Without warning, however, Pauline didn’t return for the fifth series – something some fans felt upset about!
Instead, Pauline was replaced by Jessica Ransom as the new receptionist Morwenna Newcross.
At the time, a fan wrote: “Pauline was apparently kidnapped by aliens when she completely disappears from the earth.
“By far the strangest and most harrowing piece of episode five was the sudden disappearance of Pauline.
“Pauline literally disappears after we had several scenes of her in series four in which her plans for new organizational systems were discussed in practice.”
Of course, receptionists come and go in real life, but Pauline was a popular character and many fans believed she deserved a goodbye!
In fact, new doctor Diana Dibbs (Joanna Scanlan) is asking her husband to replace Pauline, who had started a job in Bristol.
Why did Pauline leave Doc Martin? What were Pauline’s greatest storylines?
One of Pauline’s main storylines was that the receptionist decided to quit her job.
However, she is annoyed that the reference Doc Martin gave her only describes her as “competent”.
Pauline takes revenge by staying in practice and ruling it with an iron fist!
The character who was with Al Large wasn’t just a secretary either.
Because of Doc Martin’s fear of blood, Pauline received training in phlebotomy (testing and drawing of blood), which earned her a promotion.
In season three, viewers discovered that Pauline was suffering from a gambling problem.
As a result, she owed her own mother.
Pauline’s addiction to gambling finally came to a head when she was so distracted that she messed up patient records and took possession of her scooter.
After an explosive confrontation, Martin insisted that Pauline get professional help with her addiction or be fired from his service.
In other storylines, Pauline was captured by Jonathan Crosier (Chris O’Dowd).
He captured Martin, Louisa, Terry and Pauline and told Al to collect a load of explosives so that he and Terry could carry out a planned robbery.
