What happened to Cassie at the end of the third series?

Doctor Finch admits he is a rapist and serial killer whose crimes went well beyond a victim or two.

The remains of innumerable teenage girls whom he raped and killed over many decades are buried across the country.

As a psychopath, he expresses no guilt for his crimes.

His troubling lack of remorse leads Cassie to collapse under the emotional weight of her career dealing with gruesome crimes.

The Finch case was particularly troubling to Cassie because she accidentally left a confidential file in a coffee shop.

A member of the public found it and used it to single out the man as a murder suspect online. Then a vigilante stabbed him on the street.

After making Finch’s confession, Cassie took three months of sick leave to help manage her trauma.

Writer Chris Lang explains, “Here I wanted to write about murder that is really about evil.

“Because it felt very different and it’s much harder to understand what those scenes were about – listening to someone speak extremely dispassionately about the most heinous crimes.”

Why is Cassie on sick leave?

DCI Cassie Stuart goes on sick leave at the end of the third series.

Cassie’s mental health has suffered after spending almost 30 years as a detective investigating the most brutal murder cases.

Actress Nicola Walker, who plays Cassie, says, “After going through what she went through in the last story, she knows she’s broken, that she should stop.

“But in practice, too, she literally cannot leave the police without this agreement and why should she do that?

“Her problem has always been that she is too personally involved …

“But how can you not get personally involved in the things she deals with?”

Why does Cassie want to retire? Catch up with series

When the fourth series of Unforgotten begins, DCI Cassie Stuart has been away from work for a year.

She lives with her boyfriend John and their 21 year old son Adam.

Doctors have diagnosed her father Martin with dementia that sets in quickly.

Now, just a few months after receiving her police pension, she applies for medical retirement and feels unable to cope with a return to work.

She says, “I clearly know that I don’t want to go back. I’ve already given everything I have to the job. “

But it’s not that simple, because it is only three months from 30 years away.

Why does Cassie want to retire? Actress Nicola Walker reveals it all

Actress Nicola Walker explains, “When we left Cassie at the end of the last series, she felt it was necessary to quit.

“She definitely had what could easily be called a ‘breakdown’ and we wondered if she would be back.

“When we meet her on this show, you can tell she doesn’t really want to come back.

“But she is in a dire position that if she does not come back she will lose a massive part of her pension due to technical reasons.

“It is terrible that she is in a complete trap and that she is willing to return so she can get the full amount of her pension because her father is getting sicker and she considers the fact that she is likely to be financially responsible will for the care of her father.

“So she’s completely caught.

“Her entire career has been very dedicated to the police.

“She is angry and feels very betrayed, and that’s how she goes down in the history of this series.”
