Bridgerton announced yesterday that Regé-Jean Page will not return as the Duke of Hastings for season two.
The devastating news came out of the blue and ruined Easter for – if not the lives of – millions of avid fans of the Netflix drama.
The Bridgerton account announced the news on Twitter (Friday April 2) with a message from Lady Whistledown.
It read: “Dear Readers, while all eyes are on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s search for a Viscountess, we bid farewell to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings.
“We will miss Simon’s presence on screen, but he will always be part of the Bridgerton family.
“Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers can stand.”
Your grace, it’s been my pleasure. 💜🐝 pic.twitter.com/kX1nIG8pz7

It was quickly followed by a short message from the actor himself, who described his time on the show as a privilege.
Regé-Jean Page statement
He wrote: “Joy and privilege! An honor to be a family member – on and off the screen, cast, crew, and incredible fans – love is real and will just keep growing. “

The Duke of Hastings – gone, but not gone ?!
Bridgerton showrunner Shonda Rhimes then cut in: “Remember, the Duke is never gone. He’s just waiting to be watched by Binge again. #ShondalandMenOnNetflixAreForever. ”

Devastated Bridgerton fans
Fans of the show, and especially its leader, the Duke of Hastings, just can’t understand the decision.
One message reflected the thoughts of thousands and explained the move far too early.
It read: “It’s too early for you to make me want to cry Regé omg. I need time to process this, but thanks for bringing this fascinating character to life! He will be missed very much. “
A second pointed out the obvious – he’s the most talked-about character, and indeed the actor on the series.
They raged, “I really don’t understand this decision, lmao. He was the most talked about character on the show. This is really stupid. “
But it seems that this was the plan all along …
Why isn’t Regé-Jean Page back as the Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton’s second season?
Apparently the Duke of Hastings was only supposed to appear in the first series of the period drama – and that comes from the horse’s mouth.
He told Variety Magazine of his early conversations with showrunner Shonda Rhimes: “It’s a one-season arc. It will have a beginning, a middle, an end – give us a year.
“[I thought] “That’s interesting,” because then it felt like a limited series. I can come in, I can do my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on. “
Well, that’s all pretty selfish for your Bridgerton fans, Regé-Jean. But don’t worry about us, you go and enjoy a stellar career as James Bond or something.
