Comedian Kevin Hart switches to something heartier in the new Netflix movie Fatherhood.
Based on Matt Logelin’s book Two Kisses for Maddy, Hart plays a new father who is tragically widowed hours after his daughter is born.
Matt struggles to figure out how to be a dad to Maddy without wife Liz and is soon on a crash course in everything to do with his little girl.
With the help of his in-laws and best friends, he makes sure that it works for as long as possible and keeps Liz’s memory alive as best he can.
However, as Maddy (Melody Hurd) gets older, she needs more feminine influence in her life.
In the meantime, Matt needs to have this new phase of daughter and figure out how to be happy himself.
As much as this Harts Show is, the story depends on the Maddy character – and luckily, the obvious connection between the two actors really sells the story.
The stunning cast really hit the dynamics of a real family, including the grief everyone suffers from being lost.

While Matt has Maddy, his mother-in-law is busy losing her daughter and tries to infuse that into her granddaughter as often as possible.
Matt’s mother is equally concerned and wants him to return to his Minnesota homeland.
It’s a real heartbreaker at times, so bring some tissues.
Additionally, the movie doesn’t shy away from some of the tougher moments as a single father as well.
In a montage, Matt is seen repeatedly being asked, “Where’s your mom?” And in return for a number of equally obscene reasons.
During another, he’s turned away from parenting classes that are overrun by mothers, assuming it’s just for them.

But the biggest challenge comes when Matt starts falling in love with someone else.
After so many years of being alone, he has to grapple with the balance between family and love – and Maddy’s reaction to a new wife.
The film is sensitive but moves on, even though it could have been a little shorter than the final running time of 1 hour 50 minutes.
Is Fatherhood Worth the Watch?
Fatherhood is a surprisingly sweet and tender story of life when it comes to you too quickly.
Kevin Hart does a great job leading the way, with a great supporting cast around him.
The real star of the show, however, is the young Melody Hurd.
It’s easy to play a brat, or the kid who wouldn’t melt butter, but she manages to both juggle and be adorable.
It can be about 20 minutes too long, but it’s still a good little sip for an evening with an ice cream.
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Fatherhood will air on Netflix on June 18.
